I was sitting in my office after a long day at work. Tired, irritable and hungry, I reached my limit and began packing up. I couldn’t wait one more minute to get home, take a hot shower, order my favorite takeout, pop open a bottle of wine and spend time with friends and loved ones.
Then it hit me like a ton of redbottoms…
I wonder how many soldiers say that everyday but instead stay at work and on guard 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Making their way through the desert, carrying their own body weight in equipment, blinded by hot pellets of storming sand that melt their skin where it hits…until nightfall when they get to lay wet in trenches, bugs crawling in their ears, rifles in the ready position with monsters laying in wait, hunting them as prey.
I don’t even have a frame of reference to fully understand what this must be like…unless you count that time I stayed at the Comfort Inn in Virginia Beach. But even that (and it WAS bad) or the most horrible thing we can experience in a day at work or even in our lives hardly gives us the basis to fully grasp their sacrifice.
So we say thank you…but do we even really know what we’re thanking them for? We can’t possibly know.
We sit at home in our extreme comfort and convenience; demanding our rights and our liberties. But those things are costly and we, as individuals, are rarely prepared or willing to part with the currency to pay for them. But we demand them anyway and there are a courageous group of men and women who say to us, “No problem, take it, take all you want…we’ll pay.” They’re like the sugar daddies and sugar mamas of freedom…but better because we don’t have to give anything in exchange.
But their families do. Think of the newlywed solider who leaves his bride’s bedside to give himself to 248 million mistresses. Think of the soldier who leaves her infant at home to fight for the 248 million children of her neighbors. Those families hold it DOWN for the soldiers until they return.
So, when you say Happy Veteran’s Day, really say it. Don’t let a person in military uniform walk by you without saying thank you, not today or any day of the year. If they sit next to you at a restaurant, pay for their meal. If you see them at the gas station, pay for their gas. If you see one that’s particularly cute, make out with him for a few minutes in the men’s room…maybe even his cute friend. So what if she’s a girl?
All I’m saying is look for meaningful and sincere ways to say Thank You to the honorable, courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Get their back cuz they damn sure got ours.

The truth is – I lost my voice.
Not a particularly skilled writer, I rely on documenting my thoughts in their rawest form exactly as they are rendered. Random opinions oft juxtaposed with a fact or two and sprinkled with some love, a little sarcasm and — don’t forget my favorite — plenty of righteous indignation. With all that crap piled up together at the top of a steep decline, one simple push and the words flowed easily.
Until they stopped.
Something happened to me that day Congresswoman Giffords was shot in Arizona. I’m not exactly sure what it was but on that day sharing my thoughts became an absolute struggle.
Something that I used to love turned into hours staring at a blank screen, millions of taps on the backspace key and nagging concern about saying the wrong thing.
Eventually, I found myself strangely indifferent even apathetic about making my voice heard. Even as they related to all of my old favorites — religion, politics, social ills and Snookie (although you could probably combine the last two.)
Even when The Help came out…I said nothing. If Hollywood wants to keep making movies about big-eyed, dancin’, singin’ coloreds on dem ol’ cotton fields down yonder who find joy in their oppression and the good white people that love ‘em, I can accept that.
Hey, even when folks made a connection between our nation’s newfound bad credit and our first black president…I said nothing. If Obama wants to continue to solve every unsolved problem in the world including the Ulam spiral and what Kim Kardashian’s butt is made of before attacking the problem of unemployment, I can accept that too.
Not to mention, that when the NY District Attorney dropped rape charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn because the victim was, essentially, a tramp instead of reminding them with choice words that that sluts can be raped, too…I said nothing. If the DA wants to send the message that as long as you’re a poor immigrant, your vagina is public property, I can accept that, too.
Right?
I think it was the shooter. As we learned more about him, we discovered he was a walking ball of crazy. Flawed thinking and poorly crafted ideologies based on various and sundry blogs and opinions that he read on the internet with little to no basis in truth. In other words, it’s just shit folks say. And I got to worrying. Sometimes, I be playin’, y’all but what if people can’t tell? Am I participating in all of the stupid social noise, just one more insipid opinion that some idiot with a gun reads and considers valid or truthful? Think about it! The President is notREALLY my boo. He’s just my boo in my head.
Ok, so the last scenario is just evidence that I clearly watch too much Dateline. But really, social responsibility began to weigh heavy on my mind. I became concerned that, under the guise of freedom of speech, I was just putting a bunch of crap into the universe without regard for where or how it landed. I understand Andy Cohen has the same problem. (Think Real Housewives of Any Craptastic City in America)
And I struggled with that cuz you know I’m all sensitive and shit.
Clearly, I know that no one is reading this blog and doing anything other than arranging a psych eval for the author. But the sweet little Korean girl in me got all bent out of shape about my collective responsibility as a citizen of the world.
So, I smacked that overly conscious ho…and now I’m ready to go.
I missed you!!!! MWAH!
So, I’m sitting in a 3 day training class on enterprise application architecture. In other words, I’m surrounded by techies. One guy had a strange but cool-looking box approximately the size of an iPhone strapped to his laptop.
The following conversation ensued,
Geek #1: What’s that? [pointing at the box]
Geek #2: It’s extra storage to back up my megafiles.
Geek#3: You gotta get in the cloud, man. [I imagine some obscure language spoken by Nerdish refugees]
Geek#1: How much does it hold?
As Geek #2 was about to answer, Geek #3 very cleverly (I assume) interjects – “20 MB!”
The response is instantly followed by the most ungodly chorus of every socially unacceptable noise one can possibly make with one’s mouth. And although I was too dumb to be amused, I was, on the other hand, immediately turned on.

We must not tolerate domestic terrorism. It is a treacherous attack on the democratic principles for which many brave Americans have died. If we agree on nothing else, we must agree on this.

I am an unusual introvert. Like other introverts, I tend to stay within my own head and heart to process information. But unlike other introverts, I am prone to provide a steady stream of blow-by-blow commentary about every thought in the process which is usually interpreted by those around me as a constant chatter. I’ve been that way all my life and have grown accustomed to the blank stares and rapid blinks of onlookers who, at one time, probably tried but failed to understand the verbal chaos that is my thought process.
When I met him years ago in middle school, BJ Bailey immediately struck me as different. After the first few interactions, it occurred to me that, oddly, he was actually listening to my chatter.
While most people use their ears to hear, there are a few gifted folks who use their ears to listen. And every once in a while, there is person who listens with his heart. This was the BJ that I remembered. He usually did the listening while others did the talking. As a result, when he did open his mouth to speak, he always said the exact right thing. He connected with us, he made us laugh, he heard us.
After listening to stories about his philanthropy at his funeral, a grieving colleague told his family, “BJ was a mystery to us yet at the same time, he was a gift.” He did not talk about his own good deeds or very much about himself at all for that matter. Toward the end of the twenty plus years that I knew him, I knew very little about his life. I learned most of what I know about him today at his funeral.
One by one, family, friends and colleagues stood up to share a memory or some encouraging words about him. They told stories of his abounding generosity, his commitment, his work ethic, his kindness, his work with kids at church, his ability reach the kids that no one else could or even wanted to reach. My heart was filled that he had lived such a full life, giving more than he received. Of all the beautiful sentiments that were bestowed upon him today, I was most struck by his father’s words, to paraphrase – “Between the date of your birth and the date of your death, there is a dash. I am comforted to see that my son used his dash to touch the lives of so many people” And that is exactly what BJ did – he touched our lives in a good way.
I am sorry that he is gone. We need more dashes like his.

The latest data from EarthTrends estimates the female population of the world to be 3,428,196,000. And if you took all us broads and lined us up starting from the most powerful at the front of the line to the least in the back, the formerly respectable Forbes magazine thinks that Lady Gaga (yes, the bitch in the meat dress) should stand seventh in line. Either the good ole boys at Forbes who compile this list don’t know dick about the power of chicks or…who am I kidding, there’s no need to go further. That explains it.
I suspect the biggest challenge the Forbes boys had was finding 100 women they perceived as powerful in the first damn place. The world doesn’t understand what makes us powerful. Thanks to some overzealous feminists and a flawed value system, we seem think that powerful women are those that are most like men. That’s why there are a whole bunch of wealthy women on the list. That makes ‘em rich, but wealth is not power. There are a gang of CEO’s and corporate warriors on the list. That makes ‘em ambitious, but titles are not power. There are a number of celebrities on the list. But popularity is not power. Power is the ability to influence others, garner trust, effect change and impact lives. Sometimes it happens the Forbes way but other times it happens in a Big Mama way.
I’m not saying that none of the women chosen are powerful. My own beloved Michelle Obama tops their list. Certainly, I believe her to be powerful. But it would be nice to see the full spectrum of our feminine power and influence represented on the list – more educators, social change champions, advocates, policy makers, non-profit leaders, etc. You know, all the broads that are working to keep your li’l badass kids safe, healthy, educated and outta jail so he or she don’t end up robbing banks or swinging from a pole half naked to support their egregiously high number of illegitimate children and disparate baby daddies or baby mamas? Those woman warriors who fight on a different battlefield – the American community – are also powerful and should be recognized. As women, we are nurturers, mothers, caregivers as well as soldiers, rocket scientists and corporate raiders. But somehow only the more aggressive pursuits are honored.
But let’s go ahead and continue to encourage Lady Gaga. After all, Dame Edna is eventually going to die and we’ll need someone who can step in and hit the ground running.

More than halfway to our destination, the pilot’s voice interrupted our flight as we soared through the mountains.
“Folks, looks like a storm’s brewing. Please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts. Flight attendants, please secure the service carts and return to your seats. There’s going to be a good deal of turbulence.”
We returned to our seats, terrified. Everyone was quiet as the plane started to tremble and shake. Somewhere in the back of the plane, a baby started crying. BAM! The plane began a fast descent, losing altitude rapidly before recovering. Suddenly the lights go out. Pandemonium breaks out as the flight attendants jump up and begin shouting questions and instructions all at once into the darkness.
As if from on high, the pilot’s voice comes back over the intercom and announces, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is just too hard. We’re going to turn the plane around and go back to where we started. Then, we’ll swap out the flight attendants and try a different route.
And scene! The preceding is my theatrical take of the GOP’s Pledge to America. I love this document…I think this is a well crafted, refreshingly decisive, beautifully conservative manifesto of an invigorated organization that is focused and determined to be the new guard in Washington. It is almost poetic.
But poetry is not politics. And politics are not plans.
This document does not consider the reality, the enormity, the psychology of our economic situation. Famed finance guru Dave Manuel put together a quick synopsis of previous recessions and recovery times. The conclusion: the shortest, mildest recessions took the country on average of six years to restore key indicators to pre-recession levels – starting when the recession ended. I think everyone would agree that, if latest recession has ended, it certainly didn’t end long ago. I’m more inclined to agree with history and independent economists – it’s gonna take as long as its gonna take. Recovery of the job market is not going to happen soon regardless of what party is at the helm. Period.
This simple tidbit lends the GOP’s Pledge to America about as much credibility as Lindsey Lohan’s rehabilitation. Sure, it sounds like a good game, even goes through all of the steps but, at the end of the day, with the same conditions and the same Washington politics, we’ll still be strung out…er, strung along in the same way.
Let’s stop looking at rates for a minute and look at discrete jobs. According to MSNBC, there are “14.9 million out of work and looking for jobs.” Closing the gap would require several quarters of economic growth. This is more than a notion. They go on to say that jobs would need to be created at the rate of 125,000 per month. With that rate being the only factor, full recovery is nine years away. Maybe that theory is right, maybe not…but it certainly sounds more realistic than the expectation that recovery could happen in a matter of months.
Both parties need to quit playing and focus on the things we can control to engender economic growth. A strategy based solely on job creation is a gross oversimplification of the factors that brought us to this crisis point in the first place. Our economy has been on the decline since late 2007. We are a beleaguered nation, mentally exhausted from the constant pounding of a sensationalized political fight that uses our fear and our ignorance as weapons against us to swing the tide at will.
There are some complicating factors to our current economic situation. Skittish companies started jettisoning jobs rapidly in 2007. Since then, worker productivity has drastically increased as workers improved their performance to keep jobs that were perceived to be hanging on by a thread. As a result, the jobs that were lost are indeed lost. Regardless of how much you lower taxes — they are simply not needed anymore. To further that pain, the latest recession was the final death knoll for a good number of manufacturing industries in the U.S. Going forward, the focus will be on high-tech manufacturing in addition to the good ole American manufacturing stronghold e.g. agriculture. Our learning curve in the high tech areas is high. We are lagging behind Asian countries in these areas that require highly skilled workers. We may have to face the reality that our manufacturing contribution to the GDP will just be smaller until we close the gap. That doesn’t sound like growth to me…but sometimes I’m hard of hearing.
We need a focused effort on re-educating and re-training the American workforce in order to make ourselves more competitive for the new jobs in the new sectors in the new economy. This is going to be a tremendous hurdle given our abysmal world rankings in public education and our overwhelmingly skittish corporations who are waiting for consistent demand before hiring.
The truth is this current administration seems to have largely ignored the sense of urgency of the American people. We’ve spoken and spoken consistently. Our primary concern is unemployment. Not just unemployment but unemployment nonetheless. Among other things, we want jobs. Obama and his team look like they’re doing everything under the blue sky except creating jobs. But I don’t believe they’re ignoring the very issue that is driving the success…or failure of this entire presidency. The problem is they haven’t been forthcoming or realistic about their capabilities to begin with. Change is coming, yes, but not now and not soon. I think they’re doing everything in their power but I also think they’re powerless. Ask anyone who’s given birth, it’s going to take as long as it going to take. But reality doesn’t win election when folks are scared, hope does. Just as the Democrats did in the 2008 elections, the GOP are now seeking to corner the market on change.
Lesson learned: we don’t need any more promises or pledges. We need a plan and we need patience and perseverance. We need real participation from a bi-partisan Congress that is accountable to the American people to work together. Changing the guard at this point will just change the Party of No moniker from the Republicans to the Democrats.
Go vote, America. Vote to stay the course. Research your local candidates and vote only for those candidates, regardless of affiliation, with a willingness and a proven record of abandoning party politics and working toward a common goal of an America restored to greatness and stability, regardless of what party is in charge. Restore control to the American people. Restore accountability for cooperation to Congress. Demand answers from the current administration. Stalk your local politicians. Be the boss of them. Vote. Vote. Vote.
And turn off the damn T.V.
And ask more questions about Ron Brown (and if I disappear for asking too many questions about Ron Brown…then ask lots of questions about me.)
OK, the last two were just personal preferences.

While I’ve historically had a strong womanist constitution, I now concede that there are two things that a woman should never attempt without a husband: moving and getting a puppy
Why?
Because there are two things that men have been selectively evolved to understand better than women – lifting stuff up and pooping.
The move that I had anticipated completing in two days is almost halfway finished at the end of Day 3. Having been shafted by the movers, I am doing a good deal of moving things around myself. How the hell was I supposed to know that a flat screen TV and its accompanying TV stand weighed in at a collective 300 lbs? Picture a chihuahua with an afro and really cute shoes pulling a Buick.
No really, picture it – because in the midst of trying to get the new place together, my new puppy is trying to help by leaving me little housewarming gifts every unattended chance she gets. Then she barks to show me as if she had carefully and proudly selected these “gifts” from my personal home registry at Target.
Anywho, I said all that to say, it’s gonna be another day or two, folks. I really need to get settled in before my new neighbor realizes he’s apparently been “registered at Target” as well. Good ole’ Target, delivers right at your door.
